The story, neutrally told

Left · 1Anthony Foley (51), of Rosary Road, Maryland, Dublin 8, has been granted High Court bail. He is charged with assault causing harm to Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae on 16 September 2026 at Cork Street, Dublin. Left · 1Foley was refused bail in the District Court two days after the alleged incident. He appealed, and Judge Cathleen Noctor heard evidence and submissions at the High Court in Cloverhill on Wednesday, reserved judgment, and ruled on Thursday. Left · 1Garda Sgt Dave Griffin, objecting to bail, alleged that Foley approached Healy-Rae's car outside the Coombe Hospital just after 4pm. He said the Independent TD was stuck in traffic when the assailant, who was walking a dog, shouted obscenities and punched him in the face. Healy-Rae was treated by an ambulance crew and later taken to hospital for a laceration to his lip.

Left · 1Foley "vehemently denies" being the person in the video evidence. Mixed · 2The judge found no evidential basis for Garda fears that Foley would fail to appear or would interfere with witnesses via social media or at the TD's workplace. She noted the seriousness of the daytime attack and was satisfied a conviction would likely bring a custodial sentence. She rejected concerns that bail would lead to another serious offence targeting a politician, saying she was "not convinced it was clearly politically motivated" but rather an alleged general attack on a person who happened to be an elected representative. Left · 1Bail conditions include an independent surety of €500 (no cash needed) and Foley's own bond of €1,400. He must live at a Garda-approved address, sign on twice daily at his nearest Garda station, observe an 8pm-to-8am curfew and stay out of the Dublin 2 area entirely.

Left · 1The court heard the investigation file was in its latter stages of preparation and that Foley receives €254 a week in disability benefit. He is due back in the District Court later this month for the DPP's directions.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
