The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Christopher Cockell, 50, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 28 October 2026 charged over a crash on the A61 between Barnsley and Wakefield that killed six people in July 2024. Mixed · 2The Daily Mirror reported that he also faces one count of failing to stop after a road accident; the Daily Mail's account mentions only the six counts of causing death by dangerous driving. Mixed · 2The dead were Shane Roller, 33, his partner Shannen Morgan, and their daughters Rubie, nine, and Lillie, four, whose Ford Focus collided with a BMW S100 XR motorbike, and the motorcyclists, married couple Christopher Barton, 56, and Janine Barton, 48, from Barnsley.

Right · 1The couple had a third daughter who was not in the car and was left orphaned; a GoFundMe set up for her care and education raised more than £400,000, according to the Daily Mail. Mixed · 2The crash happened near the village of Mapplewell, Barnsley, according to the Mirror; the Mail, citing an inquest opening, said the Focus, driven by Mr Roller, collided head-on with the motorbike at around 3.50pm and burst into flames. Mixed · 2The hearing lasted about two minutes, and no details of Cockell's alleged role in the crash were given; he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth, and did not enter pleas.

Mixed · 2District Judge David Kitson sent the case to Leeds Crown Court, saying the charges were too serious for the magistrates' court, with a first hearing on 1 December; Cockell was released on unconditional bail. Mixed · 2Relatives of the victims attended the hearing. At the time, West Yorkshire Police called the collision an 'absolutely tragic incident' and appealed for dashcam footage.
