The story, neutrally told

Right · 2Toronto Police announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13, that they had arrested and charged Syed Raza, 29, of Toronto, over the burning of Israeli flags outside a church in North York. Right · 2Police said that at about 1:02 a.m. on Oct. 7, Raza went to the area of Sunrise Avenue and O'Connor Drive, removed Israeli flags placed in front of the church and set them alight; JNS, citing police, adds that he fled. Right · 2The church is named differently in the two reports (the National Post says Word of Faith International Christian Centre, JNS and the CIJA statement say Faith International Christian Centre).

Right · 2Investigators identified Raza at a demonstration near Dundas Street East and Yonge Street at about 4:06 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, and arrested him. Right · 1He faces charges of arson, mischief under $5,000, mischief interfering with the lawful enjoyment of property, and disobeying a lawful court order, and was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Oct. 11. Right · 2The Toronto Police Service Hate Crime Unit investigated, but JNS reports that police did not announce any hate-related charges.

Right · 1The incident fell on the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on Israel of Oct. 7, 2023, which the National Post says killed 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage. Right · 2On the day of the incident, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and UJA Federation of Greater Toronto called it "disturbing" and urged government leaders at every level to condemn the attack; JNS quotes the groups as calling it a "hate-motivated arson attack". Right · 1Josh Landau, CIJA's senior director of government relations for Ontario, told JNS that the swift arrest showed hate-motivated acts must have consequences, and thanked police and the church congregation.

Right · 1The Consulate General of Israel in Toronto also condemned the incident, saying a church should be a place of peace, not a target for hatred. Right · 2City councillor and mayoral candidate Brad Bradford called it "an act of intimidation" and, in JNS's account, "not a protest". Right · 1JNS adds context that Jews were the targets of 82% of religion-based hate crimes in Toronto in 2025, according to city statistics, and that B'nai Brith Canada warned in May that 2026 was on pace to be the most violent year for Canadian Jews.

Right · 1The charges are allegations and have not been tested in court; neither report includes comment from Raza or a stated motive from police.
