The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Marvel editor Tom Brevoort has confirmed that Betsy Braddock, the X-Men hero formerly known as Psylocke and later Captain Britain, will use the codename Butterfly. Centre · 2The name appeared in Brevoort's rundown of the Maximum X-Men team, which Screen Rant describes as a blog post and Collider as an October 11 newsletter. The roster is Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Betsy Braddock, Firestar and Justice; Collider also lists Storm and Wolverine, who assembled the team. Centre · 2Maximum X-Men, written by Christopher Yost and illustrated by Tony S. Daniel, launches on December 2, 2026, at $4.99 for issue #1. The series has the X-Men take over as Earth's main protectors after the Avengers disband following Chip Zdarsky's Avengers: Armageddon, with an apparent Negative Zone invasion in the opening storyline.

Centre · 2Both outlets say the name comes from the glowing pink butterfly shape that Betsy's telepathic energy takes when she uses her powers. Centre · 2Betsy debuted in Captain Britain in 1976. She became a major X-Men figure as Psylocke, after swapping bodies with the ninja Kwannon. In 2018 the two were restored to their own bodies, and Kwannon kept the Psylocke name. Betsy later took up the Captain Britain role. Centre · 2Screen Rant says fans had expected the codename to debut in a story in the October 14 Captain Britain 50th Anniversary Special, and speculates that Brevoort may have jumped the gun, though it says this isn't confirmed. Collider treats the news as an official renaming and says it settles whether Marvel would return Betsy to the Psylocke name, since earlier Maximum X-Men announcements had listed her as Psylocke.

Centre · 2Screen Rant also asks whether 'Butterfly' is too slight a name for a trained ninja with great telekinetic power, while noting its ties to the character's iconic appearances. Collider says the name gives her a codename without someone else attached to it.
