The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2A Maryland teenager identified only as "JV", a 15-year-old high school student, has filed a defamation suit against CBS News in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, seeking at least $20 million in damages. Mixed · 2According to the suit, JV was riding an e-dirt bike past the National Mall on June 20 when he was briefly detained and handcuffed over the e-bike, then released without charges. Mixed · 2The suit says a June 21 CBS Evening News report used video of him from behind in handcuffs while anchor Jericka Duncan said five people had been arrested for vandalizing the Reflecting Pool, falsely suggesting he was one of them. It says he was identifiable by his hair and a distinctive hoodie logo.

Mixed · 2The suit says the version posted on CBS's website and social media showed JV's face as he turned around while Duncan discussed the arrests and named David Hearn, an Olympian; it says that version was viewed at least 1.8 million times on social media. Right · 1The complaint alleges CBS either knew its portrayal was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth, because the original video it obtained clearly distinguished the e-bike detention from the vandalism. Mixed · 2JV's lawyers say he was recognised by friends and acquaintances, and that he has suffered embarrassment, humiliation, anxiety, loss of sleep and emotional distress, plus fear the report will affect his college admissions, athletics and career. The Fox News account adds that friends distanced themselves from him.

Right · 1The suit argues the accusation was especially damaging because the Reflecting Pool renovation was a subject of intense national attention and political controversy, and President Donald Trump had said those accused of vandalism should be "prosecuted to the max." Mixed · 2According to the suit, Duncan issued a retraction on Aug. 21, saying "We never should have published this story." The complaint calls CBS's acknowledgment belated and says it cannot undo the harm. Mixed · 2A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment; Deadline said the suit was first reported by TheDesk.net.

Mixed · 2The underlying vandalism case has weakened. Apart from Hearn, no one was charged, and his case was dismissed after U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro acknowledged the damage came from faulty contractor work; Deadline cited a Washington Post report that an inspection found the pool's blue coating failed in at least 85 places. Fox News says a judge permanently dismissed the case against Hearn, who was accused of damaging the $14 million renovation.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
