The story, neutrally told

Mattel announced on Wednesday that Ynon Kreiz will step down as chairman and CEO effective Oct. 2 to take a senior leadership position at another public company. Mattel did not name his destination, and a Mattel spokesperson declined to comment. Roger Lynch, formerly Condé Nast's CEO, takes over as Mattel's chief executive.

The Hollywood Reporter said rumour was building that he could join David Ellison's combined Paramount-Warner Bros. Variety, citing two industry sources, later reported that he will join Paramount in a senior role, and one source said Ellison's courting had been in the works for months. Deadline, citing sources, said Kreiz has talked with Ellison about a senior role, that the exact title and scope are not finalized, and that he would likely have international businesses in his portfolio.

Paramount did not comment to any of the three outlets. Kreiz cannot be appointed at the combined company until a judge approves Paramount's settlement with 12 state attorneys general and the deal closes; Variety puts the deal at $111 billion and Deadline at $110 billion. Kreiz joined Mattel in 2018 and pushed it into film, including Barbie; he previously ran Maker Studios and Endemol.

Deadline notes Mattel's share price was flat during his tenure and that Paramount's president post has been vacant since Jeff Shell left. Cindy Holland announced her exit on Tuesday, with HBO's Casey Bloys expected to oversee streaming.
