The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Einstein, a series from CBS Studios, was one of the big shows offered to international buyers at the MIPCOM programming market in Cannes this week, with Paramount Global Content Distribution handling sales. Centre · 2Matthew Gray Gubler, formerly of Criminal Minds, plays Lewis Einstein, the great-grandson of the physicist Albert Einstein. According to the official logline quoted by TVLine, Lewis is brilliant but directionless, and his reckless antics land him in trouble with the law. Centre · 1Lewis is then pressed into service helping Detective Teri London, played by Brooklyn Nine-Nine alum Melissa Fumero, solve her most puzzling cases.

Centre · 1The show premieres at midseason in 2027, with the exact date still to be announced. Centre · 2The series comes from Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk, the executive producers behind Monk. Tony Shalhoub, the star of Monk, joins as Lewis's estranged father, Jack, who is introduced in jail. Centre · 1Gubler is also a producer. He told Deadline he designed and animated the title sequence, that his drawings appear in every episode as the way his character solves clues, and that he worked 19-hour days because he went into the editing room as soon as he wrapped.

Centre · 2Gubler said Lewis is the opposite of Criminal Minds' Dr. Spencer Reid. In both interviews he compared the two characters to a palm tree and a pine tree. He described the new show's mystery as lighthearted and not gory, because Lewis is terrified of dead bodies. Centre · 1The project took a long route to the screen. Gubler said Breckman pitched it to CBS eight years ago and that Amy Reisenbach, who now runs the network, revived it when she took over. Deadline reports the show was pushed back a year and that Melissa Fumero replaced Rosa Salazar in the female lead. Centre · 1In TVLine's New York Comic Con interview, Fumero said Teri is more grounded than her Brooklyn Nine-Nine character Amy Santiago and that Lewis 'makes her better at her job'. Shalhoub called Jack's relationship with his son 'very complicated and, frankly, dysfunctional'.

Centre · 1Gubler also teased guest stars to come. He was asked about returning to Criminal Minds after his brief appearance in Season 18, but TVLine's text does not report his answer.

Framing
Both outlets run promotional, cast-friendly interview pieces. Deadline's Q&A with Gubler is set at the MIPCOM international sales market. TVLine's video interview with three stars is set at New York Comic Con.
Emphasis
Gubler's creative role as producer and artist, the contrast between Lewis Einstein and Spencer Reid, the Monk creative reunion, and the cast's chemistry.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither piece offers critical assessment, ratings expectations or a premiere date. Deadline gives little on the cast beyond Gubler. TVLine says little about the international sales angle.
Charged language
“comedic genius”“lovingly neurotic”
For example
