Media Research Center says Apple News left DNC debt stories out of its top 20

The conservative watchdog Media Research Center says none of 78 stories on the DNC's debt appeared in Apple News' top 20 between Jan. 1 and Sept. 28. It calls this suppression. Only right-leaning outlets have covered the claim, and no response from Apple is reported.

The story, neutrally told

Right · 2The Media Research Center (MRC), a conservative media watchdog, said in a new analysis that Apple News did not promote any story about the Democratic National Committee's financial problems among its top 20 stories from Jan. 1 to Sept. 28, 2026. Right · 2MRC president David Bozell said: "Apple isn't curating the news. It's running a high-tech protection racket for the political left." He also said the study found Apple News "suppressing coverage of the Democratic Party's fundraising woes while eagerly serving up stories damaging to Republicans." Right · 1According to the New York Post, MRC reviewed the top 20 stories Apple News promoted at 8:30 a.m. each day, using search terms such as "DNC," "Martin," "Fundraising," "FEC" and "Debt." It then found 78 online stories about the DNC's debt that could have been promoted, and narrowed these to 10 from publishers Apple News routinely features, confirming those publishers were available on the platform.

Right · 2MRC said at least 14 stories on the DNC's debt from outlets Apple News frequently promotes were also not featured, including USA Today, the Guardian, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and Politico. The Post's version also lists Fox News and the New York Post. Right · 2The Post reports that Apple News has roughly 125 million monthly users and is pre-installed on Apple devices. MRC says a promoted story can draw 1 million to 20 million page views. Right · 2Both outlets note that Apple News uses human editors to select much of its content, unlike Google News and Microsoft's MSN, which rely heavily on algorithms.

Right · 2The DNC blamed nearly $16 million in debt on the 2024 Biden-Harris campaign in December 2025. It took out a $15 million loan in October 2025 and, according to the New York Times, began 2026 with $17.5 million in debt. The outlets say the Republican National Committee has $230 million in the bank and no debt. Right · 1The Post says the finances have fueled calls to oust DNC Chairman Ken Martin. It adds that MRC has previously accused Apple News of left-leaning bias, including not promoting coverage of scandals involving Democratic Senate candidates Graham Platner and Abdul El-Sayed. Neither article includes a response from Apple or the DNC.

Framing
Both outlets present the MRC findings as evidence of liberal bias and suppression at Apple News. They lead with Bozell's "protection racket" quote and put the DNC's debt in a Democratic-troubles context.
Emphasis
The 78 stories, the 14 missed stories from mainstream outlets, Apple's reach, the RNC's $230 million, and pressure on DNC chairman Ken Martin.
Leaves out or plays down
No Apple response. No independent check of MRC's method. Neither notes that the 78-story count was narrowed to 10 stories from routinely featured publishers (the Post does, Breitbart doesn't). No outside view on whether the top-20 snapshot at 8:30 a.m. captures Apple's full coverage.
