The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Malaysia's Election Commission announced on Wednesday 7 October that Melaka will hold its state election on 14 November, with nominations on 31 October and early voting on 10 November. Centre · 2About 688,000 registered voters will elect the state's 28 assembly members, with 15 seats needed for a simple majority; CNA gives the figure as 687,697 and the South China Morning Post as 687,897. Centre · 1Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh dissolved the assembly on 23 September, ahead of a vote otherwise due by February 2027; the state had been run by a Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Centre · 1In the 2021 state election BN won 21 of 28 seats, Pakatan Harapan (PH) five and Perikatan Nasional (PN) two. PH joined the state government in 2023 but withdrew its support in July in protest at a constitutional amendment allowing nominated assemblymen. Centre · 2BN enters the race after winning 48 of 56 seats in Johor in July, where it contested alone, and 25 of 36 seats in Negeri Sembilan on 1 August in a pact with PN. Those results followed defeats for PH. Centre · 2BN chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on Sunday that talks with potential partners were 95 per cent complete, with an announcement expected after the date was fixed. SCMP adds that he remained open to a pact with PH, according to local media.

Centre · 2BN has said it will defend all 21 seats it won in 2021, which Ab Rauf called non-negotiable according to Bernama, while PAS reportedly plans to contest 16 of the 28 seats, including Ab Rauf's Tanjung Bidara. Centre · 2PH's Melaka chapter is reportedly finalising talks with Bersatu on a "PH Plus" arrangement. Anwar Ibrahim said discussions had taken place but no decision had been made, and PH components differ on widening the alliance: Amanah is open to it and the Democratic Action Party opposes it. Centre · 2Analysts quoted by the two outlets differ in emphasis. CNA's analysts see a possible boost for BN from the king's 18 September decision to let Najib Razak serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest, on payment of a RM50 million fine. SCMP's analysts say a BN–PAS deal would pressure PH, though one cautions that grass-roots support and turnout will matter more than leadership deals.

Centre · 2The vote is seen as a test of shifting alliances before the 16th general election, due by February 2028; Anwar has said he is open to considering calls for an earlier vote, and Zahid demanded an early national election at last month's Umno congress.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Framing
Both outlets present the vote as a test of shifting alliances. CNA gives a factual rundown of the election timetable and the state of coalition talks. SCMP leads on a BN–PAS pact against Anwar and the pressure on PH.
Emphasis
CNA stresses the timetable, the 2021 baseline, the PH withdrawal and Najib's house-arrest pardon. SCMP stresses analyst comment on BN–PAS and BN–PH options, Anwar's comments on Bersatu and the importance of grass-roots machinery.
Leaves out or plays down
CNA does not carry SCMP's analyst doubts about a BN–PH deal or its turnout caution. SCMP omits the PH withdrawal from the state government and Najib's pardon.

“landslide”“difficult contest”
For example
“in another test of shifting political alliances ahead of Malaysia's next general election” — CNA
