Edi Gathegi joins cast of Universal's 'Miami Vice '85' remake

Edi Gathegi has joined the cast of Miami Vice '85, Universal Pictures' film take on the 1980s TV series, The Hollywood Reporter reported as an exclusive. Gathegi is reported to play a small-time crook with big-time ambitions who is in over his head, according to sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter. Michael B. Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler plays James (Sonny) Crockett, the roles originated on TV by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson.

The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo and Andrew Schulz. Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing, with production reportedly due to start in November in New York and Miami. Universal has set a release date of May 19, 2028, and the film will be shot for Imax, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gathegi played Mr. Terrific in James Gunn's Superman and is due to reprise the role in next year's Man of Tomorrow; Collider adds that a spin-off series is slated.
