The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Seattle's Office of Labor Standards announced that the city's minimum wage will rise from $21.30 to $22.14 an hour on 1 January 2027, to reflect inflation in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area. Right · 1Fox News reports that Washington state's rate will rise 60 cents, from $17.13 to $17.73, on 1 January. It says California will go from $16.90 to $17.40 and Connecticut from $16.94 to $17.48. It adds that New Jersey will rise 56 cents to $16.48 for most workers and Michigan from $13.73 to $15. Centre · 1Newsweek, citing the Business Tax Deadlines calendar, counts 102 minimum wage changes set for 2027 across 20 states and 74 cities, counties or other local jurisdictions. It says 73 take effect on 1 January and 29 on 1 July.

Mixed · 2Maine's rate will increase from $15.10 to $15.70, and Montana's from $10.85 to $11.20 under annual cost-of-living adjustments. Fox adds that Nebraska will go from $15 to $15.26, and that Florida reached $15 on 30 September and Missouri is also at $15. Mixed · 2Many of the increases are automatic indexing to inflation; others are scheduled steps toward a target, such as Florida's six-year path to $15. Washington's rate is recalculated each September from the CPI-W, announced on 30 September and effective on 1 January. Centre · 1The federal minimum has stayed at $7.25 since 2009, while the CPI has risen by over 50 percent since then, according to Newsweek. Bills to raise it have failed in Congress, including a bipartisan Hawley–Welch proposal to double it. Newsweek also notes that President Donald Trump called $7.25 "a very low number" in 2024, but warned that a large rise could hurt businesses.

Right · 1Fox News presents the rises as a business-cost issue. It notes that since 2025 all Seattle employers, including small businesses, face the same inflation-adjusted minimum, and that some restaurant owners who later closed cited labor costs. It reports Washington's August unemployment rate at 4.9% against 4.1% nationally. Right · 1Conservative commentator Jason Rantz told Fox that Democrats are making the business climate in Washington "more untenable", citing crime, a new income tax and regulation as well as labor costs. A Seattle spa owner said she cut front-desk shifts because of higher labor costs. The articles give no response from officials or from worker advocates.
