The story, neutrally told

Left · 2Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old man from Melbourne, has been found dead in Peru weeks after he failed to return from a solo hike in the Huayhuash region of the Andes. Left · 2His friends and family announced the news in a social media statement, saying: "With a heavy heart we are so sorry to tell you Jordan has been found, and he did not survive." Left · 1The ABC understands local authorities told his family and friends that his body had been found in the Mitucocha Lagoon area, a high-altitude lake at 4,270 metres.

Left · 2Yap left his hostel in Huaraz on 14 September for a hike expected to take about 10 days, and his friend Kevin Nguyen said he had had no contact with anyone since that date. Left · 1He was due to check into a hotel on 23 September and fly from Lima to Cusco the next day; when he did not appear and missed the flight, his family reported him missing. Left · 1The search involved local rescue teams, police and people sharing appeals online, and the family raised $90,500 in an online appeal to fund the private search, saying unused funds would be returned.

Left · 2His father, Vinh Dao, had told the ABC that Yap was an experienced hiker but that this was one of his first solo trips; the Independent adds that he had lost a satellite beacon in the days before setting out. Left · 2Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was assisting the family and sent condolences; a spokesperson said privacy obligations prevented further comment. Left · 2The cause of death has not been given in the coverage, and the two outlets differ on the location of the trek relative to Lima: the ABC describes the lake as around 200 kilometres north of the capital, the Independent places the trek about 400km northeast of it.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
