The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued an arrest warrant on Thursday 8 October for former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro and ordered his prison sentence to start immediately. Mixed · 2Bolsonaro was sentenced in June for lobbying the Trump administration to sanction members of Brazil's government and to impose higher tariffs on Brazilian exports during the trial of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, over a coup plot. Centre · 1Anadolu Agency reports that the conviction became final on 3 October after appeals were rejected, according to the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The sentence is four years and two months under an initial semi-open regime, plus a fine of 50 daily payments. The STF's First Panel unanimously convicted him of using his position as a federal lawmaker to seek foreign sanctions against Brazilian authorities.

Centre · 1Moraes also cancelled Bolsonaro's Brazilian passport, and the court told the Superior Electoral Court that his political rights remain suspended while the conviction stands. Right · 1In his ruling, Moraes said the defendant "cannot benefit from his own wrongdoing by fleeing the national territory to an unknown location", and he warned federal police to arrest Bolsonaro if he returns to Brazil. Mixed · 2Bolsonaro, 42, has lived in the US, in Texas, since 2025 and holds a green card; AP says his long absence cost him his congressional seat and his job as a federal police investigator. Brazilian authorities would need to secure his return for the sentence to be carried out.

Right · 1AP notes the decision came less than three weeks before a presidential runoff between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Eduardo's brother Flávio Bolsonaro, who won the most votes in the first round. Eduardo has been a key link between Flávio and the Trump administration, and took him to the White House on 26 May. Right · 1AP says the Bolsonaro family regards Moraes as a political enemy, that Moraes chaired the investigation that led to Jair Bolsonaro's 27-year sentence last year, and that he has since been involved in corruption accusations. His lawyer did not immediately respond to AP, and AP says Trump administration members have never commented on the conviction. Right · 1Law professors quoted by AP say extradition is unlikely: the 1961 US-Brazil treaty would require Trump administration approval, and coercion in judicial proceedings is not on its list of extraditable offences. One said the court probably will not request it and is instead applying pressure through the passport cancellation.
