Mourinho defends Mbappe over criticism of knee injury recovery away from Madrid

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho called criticism of Kylian Mbappe's recovery from a knee injury "ridiculous", saying the striker followed the club's requirements. Mbappe had recovered in France and Switzerland and was pictured at a Paris nightclub entrance and on a bicycle.

The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho dismissed criticism of striker Kylian Mbappe as "ridiculous" at a news conference on Friday 9 October, on the eve of Real's La Liga home match against Villarreal. Mixed · 2Mbappe, the 27-year-old French captain, was criticised for recovering from a left knee injury in France and Switzerland rather than in Madrid; Al Jazeera says he suffered a hyperextension of the joint in a Nations League match against Turkiye on 25 September. Mixed · 2He was also pictured at the entrance of a Parisian nightclub and photographed on a bicycle in Switzerland, and some fans claimed this was a deliberate snub of Mourinho, who days earlier had said players should avoid skiing or riding bicycles to avoid injury.

Mixed · 2Mourinho said all players obliged to attend recovery sessions were present, that Mbappe came to Madrid for scans like the others, and that he then saw a specialist in France because of his history with the knee. Mixed · 2Mourinho said the "discotheque" was not one, as it was used for a private Fashion Week event, and that the Swiss hotel, made up of small houses, lends bicycles so guests can reach communal areas. Mixed · 2He said he was "certain" Mbappe, the all-time World Cup record goalscorer, had fulfilled "his obligations to Real Madrid" and shrugged off the prospect of a hostile reception on Saturday.

Mixed · 2Both outlets note Real trail Barcelona by six points; Al Jazeera adds that Real lost to Atletico Madrid in their last match. Mixed · 2It is not the first time this season fans have targeted Mbappe: the far-right-linked, stadium-banned group Ultras Sur objected last month when he, Vinicius Jr and Ibrahima Konate partially rolled up "We are all Ceutans" T-shirts supporting people in Spain's Ceuta enclave, which faces a migration crisis. Left · 1Al Jazeera also says Mbappe was criticised earlier this season over where he recovered from a previous injury, prompting an online "Mbappe Out" campaign by some fans.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
