The story, neutrally told

Germany claimed their first win under new coach Juergen Klopp on Thursday 1 October, beating Serbia 2-0 in the Nations League. Klopp picked a completely new starting XI from the side that lost to Greece last time out, with debuts for goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and winger Derry Scherhant. Germany attacked in waves but only took the lead in the 39th minute, when Florian Wirtz set up Tom Bischof for his first senior national team goal in his second cap. Wirtz added the second just past the hour with a finish from the edge of the box, after Nick Woltemade had missed a sitter at the back post.

The win came at the third attempt of Klopp's return to coaching, and the report judged Germany full value for it. Portugal, playing for the first time since Cristiano Ronaldo walked out on the squad and put his international future in doubt, beat Denmark 4-2 and lead Group A4 with a perfect nine points from three games. Joao Cancelo and Goncalo Ramos put Portugal ahead twice in the first half, and Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Hojlund equalised for Denmark each time. Vitinha scored in the 67th minute and Joao Felix added a late fourth, giving Jorge Jesus' side a six-point lead.

In Greece, the Netherlands came from two goals down to draw 2-2. Fotis Ioannidis and Georgios Masouras scored first-half goals for Greece, Virgil van Dijk pulled one back just before the hour, and Tijjani Reijnders equalised a minute from the end. Dan James and Neco Williams scored as Wales beat 10-man Norway 2-1 for their first points of the campaign. In League B, Ireland drew 2-2 with Austria in Dublin despite two goals from Troy Parrott. The match was briefly stopped when tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch in protest at Ireland having played Israel in their previous fixture. Ireland's next game, a 'home' tie against Israel, will be played behind closed doors in neutral Serbia.
