The story, neutrally told

NBC has released the first trailer for its new fall sitcom Newlyweds, which stars Tim Daly and Téa Leoni. The series premieres on NBC on Friday, October 23; TVLine gives the slot as 8:30 p.m. Leoni plays Jeanie, a free-spirited woman, and Daly plays James, a buttoned-up professor; the official description says they marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship in a later-in-life love story.

The two outlets describe the trailer's opening differently: Deadline says it starts with the pair meeting at a valet stand, while TVLine says they meet on a blind date and soon talk of marriage, then answer 'I do' to a rock-climbing instructor's question about getting 'hitched'. TVLine says the couple marry in Vegas and then face obstacles including James' nosy ex-wife, Claudia, and Jeanie's skeptical kids, plus a teaching assistant who moves in with them. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Claudia and is also credited as co-creator; Emma Meisel and Ignacio Diaz-Silverio play Jeanie's children Poppy and Lolo, Bill O'Neill plays assistant Arvid, and Al Madrigal plays James' divorced friend Dan.

Deadline reports that Gail Lerner co-created the show with Curtis and is showrunner, Pam Fryman directed the pilot, and Universal Television is the studio, with Lionsgate Television and The Tannenbaum Company among the executive producers. TVLine notes that Leoni and Daly met on the set of CBS' Madam Secretary, where they played a married couple, and married in 2025; it also recalls their earlier NBC sitcom roles in The Naked Truth and Wings.
