The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Netflix's three-part documentary series The One About Matthew Perry, directed by Mary Robertson, premieres on 27 October, a day before the third anniversary of the Friends actor's death. Mixed · 2Perry's younger sister, Mia Perry Bowick, is one of its central voices, and friends including Tim Harrington, Kevin Pollak, David Pressman and Jeff Strauss also appear, according to Newsweek. Mixed · 2Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer do not appear. Robertson told The New York Times that the cast was approached and decided not to take part, and said she understood they are grieving.

Centre · 1Newsweek adds that Perry's stepfather, Keith Morrison, and other family members also declined to participate. Left · 1Robertson said Warren Littlefield, who helped greenlight Friends, describes being in the room when Perry auditioned for Chandler. Centre · 1Bowick says Perry spent more than $7 million pursuing sobriety. Newsweek notes that coverage of his 2022 memoir cited more than $9 million.

Mixed · 2Bowick says Perry had just left treatment around the time of Chandler and Monica's wedding episode. She also says he was excited about the storyline, because he felt less spotlighted than Rachel and Ross and it let him play a tender, vulnerable side. Centre · 1Bowick describes the private funeral: she says the five co-stars arrived together, Aniston was the first to embrace her, and they held hands around the casket crying. Newsweek is the only outlet here to report this. Centre · 1Perry died on 28 October 2023 at age 54. The Los Angeles County medical examiner found the cause was the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine effects contributing, and ruled it an accident.

Mixed · 2Five people were prosecuted over the ketamine supply: assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, Erik Fleming, doctors Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez, and Jasveen Sangha. The Independent reports that Sangha, called the "Ketamine Queen", was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
