The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Netflix released the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew on Tuesday 13 October 2026. Centre · 1The film adapts C.S. Lewis's 1955 novel, a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Gerwig wrote and directed it. Centre · 3It opens in cinemas, including IMAX, on 12 February 2027 and reaches Netflix on 2 April; outlets describe it as Netflix's first wide theatrical release, and Rolling Stone and Den of Geek say it will have a five-week (50-day) run.

Mixed · 2The trailer follows Digory and Polly, who use magic rings from Digory's Uncle Andrew to travel between worlds and meet Jadis, the future White Witch, and Aslan. Centre · 2The cast includes David McKenna as Digory, Beatrice Campbell as Polly, Daniel Craig as Andrew Ketterley, Emma Mackey as Jadis, Carey Mulligan as Digory's mother, and Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan. Left · 3The trailer is scored to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven". Outlets say the band rarely licenses its music for film, and Gerwig said Robert Plant and Jimmy Page agreed after she showed them an early version of the film and discussed its themes.

Left · 2Gerwig said the song, which she described as a spiritual journey, made sense for introducing the film's world. Outlets report that Plant and Page are fans of Lewis. Left · 2Netflix showed the trailer at an IMAX preview event at AMC Lincoln Square in New York for press and influencers, where Stephen Colbert interviewed Gerwig. Left · 2Gerwig recounted that she approached Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos at a cocktail party after Netflix acquired the Narnia rights, urged him to start with The Magician's Nephew, and was asked about 20 minutes later whether she wanted to write it, before Barbie.

Left · 2Gerwig said Sarandos told her to make the film for the biggest screen she could imagine, and that she has long loved the books. The Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt score and early music work are also noted. Centre · 1Screen Rant notes that the trailer does not reveal Streep's voice for Aslan, only a snippet of the lion's roar.
