Centre · 2Netflix has released a new trailer for The Mosquito Bowl, a World War II drama based on a true story. Centre · 1The film premieres in theatres on 30 October and begins streaming on Netflix on 25 November. Centre · 1It is based on Buzz Bissinger's non-fiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Peter Berg directs and co-wrote the script with Mark L. Smith. Bissinger is Berg's cousin, and Berg adapted Bissinger's earlier book Friday Night Lights.

Centre · 2Nicholas Galitzine plays John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård plays Bob Bauman, Ray Nicholson plays Tony Butkovich and Tom Francis plays David Schreiner. Pat McAfee, a former NFL kicker turned broadcaster, plays a drill sergeant, and Berg also appears as General Simon Buckner. Centre · 2The story follows college football stars who put their careers on hold after Pearl Harbor to serve as Marines in the Pacific. In 1944, before the Battle of Okinawa, Marines on Guadalcanal played the game that became known as the Mosquito Bowl. Centre · 2According to Collider, 65 Marines played in the game, which took place on an island plagued by biting insects, and 15 of them did not survive Okinawa. Screen Rant says the two regiments involved already had a rivalry, according to Bissinger.

Centre · 1Berg said the young men were at the height of their youth and thought they could win the war as they won football games, but were "immediately introduced to a whole other level of human behavior."
