The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2The Dutch public broadcaster NPO said on Tuesday 27 October that the Netherlands will not send a contestant to the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, reversing an earlier decision to take part. Centre · 1Anadolu Agency, citing NOS, reported that NPO found "insufficient support" for taking part after consulting other broadcasters. Centre · 1NPO media director Jurre Bosman said Israel's participation "elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division".

Centre · 1NPO chair Jet de Ranitz said the body initially felt there was enough support to return but could not find a suitable format, and concluded it is "currently too early" to participate. Left · 1The Independent reported that NPO had planned a joint project among several public broadcasters, with NPO coordinating selection, coverage and commentary, but was unable to secure a broadcaster willing to send a Dutch artist. Centre · 1The contest will still be shown in the Netherlands: NOS will broadcast it, including live shows, Dutch commentary and a preview programme.

Centre · 1In August, the broadcaster Avrotros said it would not take part in 2027, arguing the event had lost its neutral character amid the war in Gaza. It returned responsibility for the entry to NPO, which announced in September that the Netherlands would participate, with an independent team overseeing selection. Left · 1The September decision to return drew backlash: according to The Independent, hundreds of NPO employees sent a letter opposing Dutch participation earlier in October, and a number of prominent Dutch media personalities publicly objected. Centre · 1The Netherlands, Iceland, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia boycotted the 2026 contest over Israel's participation, amid criticism of its military actions in Gaza and the Middle East.

Left · 2AFP, carried by The Hindu, said the 2026 contest was watched by 131 million viewers, down 35 million on the year before; The Independent cited organisers as saying about 130 million, down from 160 million in 2025. Centre · 1Contest director Martin Green said he was "deeply sorry" but understood and respected the decision, and that Eurovision "matters in a divided world". He said organisers look forward to welcoming a Dutch entry again. Centre · 1Organisers have announced changes to address the divisions, including barring any country involved in an armed conflict from hosting and altering the voting. Ireland will also skip 2027, the head of Spain's public broadcaster has backed a boycott, and the Czech broadcaster has withdrawn citing spending cuts.

Centre · 1The 2027 contest is scheduled for Burgas, Bulgaria, with semifinals on 11 and 13 May and the final on 15 May. Mixed · 2Bulgaria's Dara won the 2026 contest in Vienna with "Bangaranga", and the Netherlands, a participant since the first contest in 1956, has won five times, most recently with Duncan Laurence in 2019.
