The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Sony Pictures Entertainment has released a new trailer for Jumanji: Open World, which Screen Rant says is set to debut in theaters on December 25. Centre · 1The film is directed by Jake Kasdan, who also directed Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). Centre · 2Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart return as the in-game characters from the previous two films.

Centre · 2Screen Rant says the trailer opens with jungle animals rampaging through suburbia at Christmas, and that Spencer (Alex Wolff) suspects the game is bleeding into the real world; the Evening Standard describes creatures causing chaos in a public square, with Spencer saying "I think Jumanji has spilled out into the world". Centre · 1Screen Rant reports that Spencer's mother (Marin Hinkle) is sucked into the game and ends up in the body of Dr. Xander "Smolder" Bravestone (Johnson), while Spencer is in the body of Ruby Roundhouse (Gillan); new players including the chef Donatas and a young boy, Tyson, also enter the game as Black's and Hart's avatars. Centre · 1The trailer promises "one final game" and, per Screen Rant, includes a clip showing the return of Nick Jonas as in-game character Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough.

Centre · 1The Evening Standard highlights a fight on a train, Hart's character accidentally firing a bazooka, and a closing moment in which a hippopotamus leaps and takes Bravestone into its mouth. Centre · 2The outlets count the franchise differently: Screen Rant calls it a four-film franchise, while the Evening Standard calls this a fifth and final instalment, noting the 1995 original and the 2005 spin-off Zathura; the Standard adds that the three Johnson-Gillan-Hart-Black films were positively received and the franchise has grossed two billion US dollars worldwide.
