The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, operator of New York's Plaza Hotel, announced on 14 October that the hotel will close in January 2027 for a restoration of its landmark facade expected to take four years. Left · 1The Hollywood Reporter said the hotel is expected to stay closed until 2031 if the work finishes on time, though no reopening date has been announced. Mixed · 2The 18-story building, at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, opened in 1907 and was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh; it has 282 hotel rooms and 181 condominiums.

Mixed · 2The event rooms and the Palm Court restaurant are also set to close in January, according to hotel receptionists cited by The New York Times. Mixed · 2Fairmont gave no details of the work or its cost, saying the plan reflects the complexity of maintaining a property of such architectural and historical significance; it declined to say whether condo residents would be displaced, and declined The Hollywood Reporter's request for comment. Right · 1Andrew Dolkart, a Columbia University historic preservation professor, said the facade was redone during the condo conversion and he was surprised it needs another extensive renovation, but that closing made sense because noise would make luxury prices unjustifiable.

Right · 1A spokesperson for the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council said the 378 members who worked at the Plaza would have the right to return at the same pay on reopening, and the union will try to find them other jobs meanwhile. Left · 1The hotel was designated a New York City landmark in 1969 and previously closed in 2005 for a renovation that turned many rooms into residences, reopening in 2008; Donald Trump owned it from 1988 to 1995.
