The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will star in Season 5 of HBO's anthology series True Detective, which is set to begin production in 2027. Mixed · 2Cage will play Henry Logan and Banderas will play Rai García; few other character or plot details are known. Mixed · 2Cage's involvement had been rumoured since summer 2025, and he all but confirmed it at New York Comic Con the week before, saying "I think I might do a season of True Detective." Speculation about Banderas first surfaced late last year.

Mixed · 2Issa López, who wrote, directed and ran Season 4, "Night Country", returns as showrunner, writer and director. Cage, Banderas, Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are among the executive producers. Centre · 3Variety and Deadline say the season is set in Jamaica Bay, New York. TVLine says that setting, and a description of Henry Logan as a New York detective, come from earlier reports and have not been confirmed by HBO. Left · 2HBO picked up a fifth season in February 2024 after Night Country ended with strong ratings. Variety, citing HBO, says Season 4 was the series' most-watched, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.

Centre · 1López has said there will be "important connections" to the Alaska story, though it is "a new story, new characters, everything". HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi said last year the new season is "a different milieu but just as powerful." Left · 3Cage comes from Prime Video's Spider-Noir, which TVLine says was cancelled after one season, and is next in Madden. Variety calls True Detective his second lead television role. Banderas's recent credits include Tony and Babygirl.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
