The story, neutrally told

Nigerian prosecutors have charged Adeniyi Adeyemi with defrauding the state by posing as head of a government agency and securing a $1 million budget allocation for it. The body, the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), is one the presidency denies ever establishing. Metro reports that the agency got office space in the Federal Secretariat and allegedly tried to access the central bank, while Adeyemi posted photos and videos on social media showing him hosting business leaders and foreign diplomats.

Prosecutors say he used a forged appointment letter purportedly issued by President Bola Tinubu and signed by chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and documents with presidential letterheads to request office space, staff deployments and cooperation from government agencies. In the federal capital Abuja, prosecutors read eight charges including forgery and impersonation; Adeyemi pleaded not guilty and was sent to prison detention until his next court appearance on 12 October. He was arrested in southwestern Osun state on a judge's warrant after failing to appear in court five times, and prosecutors have not accused any government officials of conspiring with him.

Adeyemi has told local media the PFIPC was genuine and that he personally approached budget officials to get it into spending plans, and said at a Lagos meeting on 26 September that the police, the Department of State Services and the anti-corruption commission had cleared him. Metro says the case has captivated Nigerians and is seen as reinforcing perceptions that procedures can be bypassed with the right documents and claims of connections.
