The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) were seen across various parts of the UK on Saturday 10 October 2026, following a Met Office forecast that they could be visible overnight. Right · 1The Daily Express, citing Reddit posts, reported sightings in the North of England, Scotland and the Midlands, and said Aurora Watch UK issued a red alert on Saturday night. Centre · 1BBC News said particularly strong activity meant the lights could be seen as far south as Devon, Hampshire and Kent on Saturday night, and that activity reached 600nT against 200nT needed for visibility in the north of the UK but not the south.

Mixed · 2The Met Office space weather forecast cited two glancing coronal mass ejections followed by a coronal hole high speed stream, with sightings possible across Scotland and similar geomagnetic longitudes where skies are clear between 10 and 13 October. Centre · 1BBC News explains that the aurora results from coronal mass ejections whose charged particles are captured by Earth's magnetic field and collide with oxygen and nitrogen, emitting coloured light; it adds that experts have said 2026 will be a peak year in the Sun's 11-year cycle. Right · 1The Met Office guidance quoted by the Express says a severe or extreme geomagnetic storm (Kp8-9+) is needed to bring the aurora belt directly over the UK, while moderate to strong storms (Kp6-7) can make it faintly visible from the UK.

Mixed · 2For viewing, the Express advises heading to high points, hills and dark places away from cities and light pollution, noting clear weather in many areas and a Reddit user's warning that cloud cover is the bigger factor; BBC News advises looking north away from streetlights and using a phone camera, because eyes in low light do not perceive colour. Centre · 1BBC News said the aurora may return on Sunday.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
