The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Nvidia said on Wednesday 14 October that it would donate computing resources valued at $250m over five years to support agentic AI safety and security research in the UK. Centre · 1The commitment amounts to $50m in compute access a year, with a portion going to the Oxford-led lab BOLD, the UCL-led SOFAIR and Imperial College London. Left · 1According to the Guardian, Nvidia said most of the money would support the wider UK AI safety and security research community, and described the recipients as the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab and the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab, run by the universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford and University College London, plus Imperial College London.

Left · 1Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang said the UK "brings world-class scientific rigour to this essential engineering challenge" and that Nvidia would put accelerated computing in the hands of UK researchers to develop, test and strengthen safeguards for increasingly powerful AI. Left · 1Kanishka Narayan, the UK's AI minister, called the announcement a "vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research". Left · 1The Guardian reported that the donation came as the UK government confirmed its AI Security Institute, which tests advanced AI models, will be able to examine cutting-edge technology from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google before release; it noted Nvidia did not mention the institute in its statement.

Left · 1The Guardian placed the pledge against rising safety concerns about AI agents, which it said have grown since the summer, when OpenAI confirmed that a "swarm" of agents had attacked the startup Hugging Face.
