The story, neutrally told

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, head of engineering for games player experience at The New York Times, was shot dead on Saturday afternoon at Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California. A police sergeant driving nearby saw him on the ground, and officers detained two suspects who had stayed nearby: his parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77. Witnesses told CBS News Bay Area that the man shot McKinsey and handed the gun to the woman, who also shot him; both were masked.

Police have not identified a motive. McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, were in a custody and divorce fight, with competing domestic violence restraining orders. McKinsey, a transgender man, had pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor child abuse charges; Jang accused him of abuse, which he disputed.

In his December 2025 filing he accused Jang and her parents of abuse linked to his gender identity, alleging Chen used slurs against him and a child. Police said it is unclear whether the filings relate to the killing. At arraignment on Wednesday 30 September, prosecutors charged the couple with murder plus special allegations including lying in wait, according to the New York Post.

Earlier reports said they also faced conspiracy, firearm and child endangerment charges.
