The story, neutrally told

Left · 1The New York Times reported on 8 October that David Milstein, top adviser to US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, stopped an urgent embassy warning from reaching Washington that Israel's record approval of West Bank settlements might cross President Donald Trump's red line against annexation, according to three US officials. Left · 1A dozen people who work with Milstein told the paper that since he arrived in April 2025 he has repeatedly blocked or rewritten embassy reporting to make Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government look better. Left · 1Officials said he blocked drafts suggesting Israel was failing to curb settler violence this spring; the cable sent instead, with Milstein as first author, was titled "Government Cracks Down on Escalating West Bank Violence."

Mixed · 2The Times also reported that Milstein suppressed an embassy report on investigations into the killings of nine Palestinian Americans by Israeli settlers and soldiers; staff found most cases had stalled, some were closed and no one had been charged. Left · 1Embassy cables reportedly fell from several a week to a few a month after Milstein took over the section handling Palestinian affairs, and staff said they stopped writing reports expecting him to block them. Left · 1The Times said it is unclear whether Milstein's actions changed White House policy or whether the memos would have reached Trump; Milstein is the stepson of radio host Mark Levin, a Trump and Netanyahu ally.

Left · 1Huckabee told the Times he "categorically" rejects the reporting, calling it "so lacking in fact that it ranks up with other Times farcical endeavors", and later called the reporters "sleazy". Left · 1Levin called the reporting "vile" and suggested possible legal action for defamation by implication. Centre · 1On 9 October Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who with more than 30 colleagues wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Huckabee in March about the killing of Nasrallah Abu Siyam, 19, accused the embassy of a cover-up and asked Foreign Relations Committee chairman Jim Risch for a hearing.

Left · 1The allegations are based on anonymous officials and have not been independently verified in the coverage here.
