The story, neutrally told

OpenAI has parted ways with three researchers, saying they violated company policies on handling sensitive information. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company's investigation confirmed the individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established procedures, "violating our policies and breaking the trust essential to our work." The Wall Street Journal was first to report the departures, saying the researchers allegedly shared confidential information with a third-party AI safety organization.

Neither the researchers, the organization nor the information involved has been named, and OpenAI did not specify what was mishandled or how. OpenAI also said its probe uncovered a pattern of misconduct, and that its safety teams have access to internal insights that require deep trust. TechCrunch said posts on X named people some users believe were among those dismissed, who had publicly expressed concerns about AI risk; TechCrunch has not confirmed their identities.

TechCrunch notes the departures came two days after The New York Times reported that executives brushed aside employee warnings about safety practices, amid security incidents involving OpenAI's AI agents and the scrapping of the planned GPT-6.1 Astra launch over safety concerns. It is unclear whether the three raised concerns through internal channels first, and OpenAI previously dismissed researchers Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov in 2024 over alleged leaks, according to The Information.
