The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Dana Altman announced on Oct. 7, 2026 that he is retiring as Oregon men's basketball coach, less than three weeks before the 2026-27 season. Right · 1Jeff Goodman first reported the news for The Field of 68, and Oregon released a statement from Altman. Mixed · 2In the statement, Altman said this was one of two really tough decisions after leaving Creighton, that he loved every minute of coaching there, and that stepping away is difficult and truly painful after almost five decades. Newsweek said he had not yet explained what is behind the decision.

Mixed · 2At Oregon, Altman went 382-182 (.677) over 16 seasons, with a 185-114 conference record, nine NCAA Tournament appearances, five Sweet 16s and the 2017 Final Four. Centre · 1His career record is 792-425 (.651) after earlier stops at Marshall, Kansas State and Creighton, where he went 327-176 in 16 seasons. He was due to begin his 17th year at Oregon and his 38th as a college head coach. Mixed · 2The exit follows Oregon's 12-20 season, in which it went 5-15 in the Big Ten and had to replace nearly its whole roster in the offseason.

Centre · 1Newsweek reported that Altman had voiced frustration with NIL and transfer portal changes and had cited a tight budget. After the season he also took part of the blame, saying "We just weren't good enough this year. And I made some mistakes, you know, with evaluation and inexperience." Mixed · 2Assistant Tony Stubblefield, a former DePaul head coach (2021 to 2024), will be interim coach. The outlets differ on his tenure at Oregon: IJR says he was Altman's assistant for 13 seasons, while Newsweek says he has been on the staff since 2024-25. Right · 1Oregon opens Nov. 2 against Montana at Matthew Knight Arena. IJR reports that Stubblefield will address media by Zoom at Big Ten Media Day and that Oregon will search for a permanent coach after the season.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
