The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Orfali Bros, a Dubai restaurant run by three Syrian brothers from Aleppo, was awarded two Michelin stars on Tuesday 6 October 2026 at the launch of the fifth Michelin Guide Dubai, held at Atlantis The Royal. Right · 1The restaurant had received its first star in 2024. Chef Mohammed Orfali said at the ceremony, "So much fight and so much love", and dedicated the award to young Arab chefs. Centre · 1Michelin described the restaurant's evolution "from a brilliant neighbourhood bistro into a flagship of Middle Eastern gastronomy". The National says it serves contemporary Middle Eastern cuisine drawing on the brothers' Syrian, Turkish and Armenian roots.

Right · 1Orfali also said 2025 had not been an easy year: the brothers opened another restaurant, Three Bros, which was added to the Bib Gourmand list, the award for good food at accessible prices. Mixed · 2FZN by Bjorn Frantzen and Tresind Studio kept their three stars, a year after becoming the first Dubai restaurants to receive them. Right · 1Il Ristorante — Niko Romito, Row on 45 and Stay by Yannick Alleno kept two stars. Birch and Kigo each won a first star, joining 12 restaurants that retained one star.

Centre · 1The National counts 20 starred restaurants in the 2026 guide: two with three stars, four with two and 14 with one. It lists 122 establishments in total, up from 119 last year, with 22 Bib Gourmands and 80 in the Michelin Selected category. Right · 1Besides Three Bros, new Bib Gourmand entries are Middle Child, S.E.A Bistrot and Yubi Dubai, and 13 restaurants joined the Selected list. Mixed · 2Special awards went to Ninad Jani of Avatara (Sommelier), Akinori Tanigawa of Kigo (Service), Zahra Erfanian Azmoodeh of Carbone Dubai (Exceptional Cocktails) and Remy Marquignon of Ossiano (Young Chef). The National adds that Gonzalo Platero and Window received the Opening of the Year Award.

Right · 1For the first time in the Middle East, Michelin introduced Mindful Voices, an editorial platform replacing the Green Star distinction. Centre · 1The National reports that several starred restaurants, including Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Ossiano and Smoked Room, are temporarily closed. It links the closures to softer demand and tourism disruption after the Iran war. Centre · 1Food writer Samantha Wood of FooDiva questioned why at least 10 closed restaurants were included. Michelin said it was "fully aware" of the closures and that the restaurants would be re-evaluated by inspectors once they reopen.

Mixed · 2Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides, said the guide reflects "a city that is developing its own culinary identity while embracing traditions from around the world". The first Michelin Guide Dubai was published in 2022.
