Padres' Stammen explains leaving Mason Miller in for Brewers' walk-off win in NLDS Game 2

Padres manager Craig Stammen said he planned to use closer Mason Miller for six outs and kept him in after three ninth-inning walks. Jackson Chourio's two-run hit then gave Milwaukee a 4-3 win and a 2-0 NLDS lead.

The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Milwaukee beat San Diego 4-3 in Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Sunday, on a walk-off hit by Jackson Chourio off Padres closer Mason Miller, to take a 2-0 series lead. Mixed · 2Miller pitched a quick eighth inning, needing 12 pitches, then returned for the ninth with San Diego trailing 3-2. Right · 1In the ninth he got one out, walked Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick, got a second out, then walked pinch-hitter Gary Sanchez to load the bases. Fox News's account has Miller at 34 pitches by the time Chourio came up.

Centre · 1Manager Craig Stammen left Miller in to face Chourio rather than change pitchers. After the game he said the plan was always to use Miller for six outs, and that Miller had been efficient in the eighth and was only battling the strike zone at the end. Mixed · 2Newsweek describes Chourio's hit as a single into centre field; Fox News calls it a 109.5 mph line drive to centre field. Centre · 1Miller had a 1.67 ERA over 70 innings with 129 strikeouts and an NL-leading 38 saves in 41 opportunities. Newsweek says he had not recorded a six-out save since his time with the Athletics in 2024.

Right · 1Fox News says the decision will be second-guessed, noting that Miller rarely throws more than 20-25 pitches and had faced nine hitters. It adds that it is understandable Stammen wanted to stay with his best reliever rather than use Jason Adam or David Morgan, though it is reasonable to ask whether a change would have served San Diego better. Mixed · 2San Diego must now win three straight games to advance. Nick Pivetta starts Game 3 at Petco Park on Tuesday against Milwaukee's Dustin May, and Newsweek says Michael King is unlikely to be available for the next two games.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
