Centre · 1Pakistan has confirmed that its military personnel are deployed in Saudi Arabia but has not said how many or where. Army spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told CNN that Pakistani forces operate in "multiple capabilities and domains" and that any involvement would be defensive. Centre · 1Defence Minister Khawaja Asif told Geo News that Pakistan and Turkey have a military presence in the area but that Saudi forces are currently the only ones in combat operations. He said Pakistan was providing support, including reconnaissance. Centre · 1A former US army attache in Pakistan, Col David O Smith, told the NYT that analysts believe around 8,000 Pakistani troops are in Saudi Arabia; Pakistan has not confirmed that figure.

Centre · 1The context is the Mecca defence pact, signed in August by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, under which an attack on one is treated as an attack on all three. Turkey's foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, said on Thursday that the pact is purely defensive and does not let Turkey send troops abroad to attack other countries. Centre · 1Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia have intensified. Three people were killed in attacks on Saudi airports this week, according to Reuters as cited by Hindustan Times. The pact's Strategic Political and Defence Committee met in Riyadh on Monday and said it would begin putting joint defence commitments into action.
