The story, neutrally told

A Palestinian man, identified by the Palestinian Health Ministry as Mashhour Yassin, 51, was killed on Thursday 1 October 2026 in an attack by Israeli settlers on the village of Yasuf in the northern occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Red Crescent said its crews treated two men with gunshot injuries, one in his fifties shot in the abdomen and another hit by live-fire shrapnel in the flank. Yasuf's village council head, Jumaa Abdel Fattah, said the attack happened around 1 pm and that dozens of settlers armed with sticks and firearms attacked the village; he said Yassin went out to defend his house and that Yassin's nephew was also wounded.

Abdel Fattah told Anadolu the assault was larger than the near-daily attacks, with settlers firing randomly and throwing stones, and that Israeli army forces were present and also fired at residents who confronted the settlers. He said the settlers came from a nearby outpost, which AFP names as Havat Anton and says was established in July. Israel's military told AFP it was looking into the details of the attack; neither report carries an Israeli account of what happened.

The attack comes amid rising settler violence: AFP cites at least 37 Palestinians killed by settlers since October 2023 according to the UN, while Anadolu cites 628 attacks in the West Bank in August per a Palestinian commission and reports the rights group Al-Baidar's accounts of attacks in four areas. AFP adds that international criticism is mounting, that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu downplayed settler violence last week, and that settlements are illegal under international law.
