The story, neutrally told

Papal envoy Cardinal Matteo Zuppi held talks with senior Russian officials during a three-day visit to Russia, Moscow said on Wednesday. The Russian Foreign Ministry said he met presidential aide Yury Ushakov, human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova and children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova. According to the ministry, the talks covered humanitarian cooperation, including efforts to locate missing people and prisoner swaps; Reuters adds that displaced children and prospects for a settlement were also discussed.

At the Vatican's request, Russian authorities arranged a visit to a facility holding captured Ukrainian servicemen, and the ministry said Zuppi spoke with them personally and saw that Russia follows humanitarian standards. The ministry also raised a "humanitarian crisis" in Oleshky, in the Russian-controlled part of Kherson region, and said Ukraine was blocking supplies to residents. Reuters noted that Ukrainian officials say their military used drones to deliver food and medicine there, and that Russian forces are preventing residents from leaving.

The ministry said the visit confirmed the constructive and regular nature of Russia-Vatican dialogue. Reuters added that Zuppi last visited Moscow in October 2024 and has also held talks in Kyiv with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
