The story, neutrally told

TMZ reported on 30 September that LIV Golf player Phil Mickelson checked himself into an addiction treatment centre due to "family trauma and addiction". According to a statement from one of his representatives, cited by TMZ, he has already left the facility. Reuters, as carried by CNA, said it could not immediately reach Mickelson's team for comment.

Mickelson, 56, played only one LIV Golf event in 2026, in South Africa, and skipped all four major championships, the first time since 1989. In April he said he was taking an extended break from competitive golf, citing a personal health matter; the outlets differ on which major he later withdrew from, with IJR naming the Masters and CNA the PGA Championship. IJR adds that in June, reports said he lost membership at The Farms Golf Club after an alleged incident involving a female employee; the club confirmed an incident and a member's removal without naming him, and his attorney denied the allegations.

IJR also says Ashley Perez later alleged Mickelson propositioned her for sex in 2015, and notes he has previously acknowledged a gambling addiction. His representatives said "Recovery is not a straight line" and that his priority is becoming "the husband, father, and man his family deserves"; no details of the treatment or family matter have been disclosed.
