The story, neutrally told

Right · 2A new poll commissioned by Steve Hilton's campaign shows Democrat Xavier Becerra leading Republican Hilton by 5.6 points in California's governor's race, 45.7% to 40.1%, with 14.1% undecided. Right · 2Pollster David Wolfson conducted the survey on Oct. 1-2, 2026, among 1,020 California voters, right after the candidates' first debate on Oct. 1. Right · 2An earlier poll commissioned by Hilton's campaign had Becerra ahead 52% to 37%. Against that, Becerra is down 6.3 points and Hilton up 3.1.

Right · 2When undecided voters were asked which way they would lean if forced to choose, 72.5% picked Becerra and 27.5% picked Hilton. Right · 1According to the New York Post, 58.8% of respondents said California is headed in the wrong direction and 28.1% said it is headed the right way. Becerra's favourability was 44.1% favourable to 45.3% unfavourable, and Hilton's was 35.5% to 50.7%. Right · 2The campaign context is an immigration dispute. In the debate, Becerra told Hilton, "You seem to welcome immigrants who look like you, but deport immigrants who look like me," according to Breitbart. Hilton then said on X that, unlike Becerra, he is an immigrant, as were his father and stepfather. The Post reports that Becerra has said his parents moved to the U.S. as immigrants.

Right · 2Hilton says Becerra's policies "have destroyed the California Dream". Becerra blames President Donald Trump for the cost of living, telling CNN, "Donald Trump just made it worse." Right · 2The result is an internal campaign poll, and it differs sharply from public polling. The Post says several recent public polls show a much wider Becerra lead. Breitbart says the RealClearPolling average, which does not appear to include this poll, gives Becerra a 21.8-point lead. The Post said it had asked the Becerra camp for comment.

Framing
Both outlets present the Hilton-commissioned poll as evidence that Becerra's lead is shrinking. The Post leads with a 'massive swing' and a 'nail-biting' race. Breitbart leads with Hilton 'gaining ground'.
Emphasis
The Post stresses the drop from a 15-point lead, voter pessimism about California's direction, and Hilton's immigrant-background attacks. Breitbart stresses the debate immigration exchange and Hilton's attacks on Becerra.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither outlet reports a response from Becerra's campaign on the poll. Only Breitbart gives the 21.8-point RealClearPolling average. Only the Post gives the favourability and wrong-direction figures.
