The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Prime Video premiered a new trailer for its series "Blade Runner 2099" at New York Comic Con, at the show's panel on Saturday. Left · 1The series is set 50 years after "Blade Runner 2049" in a reborn Los Angeles. Variety describes fugitive Cora (Hunter Schafer) taking on a final identity as a Blade Runner and being forced to partner with Olwen (Michelle Yeoh), a near-death replicant, to hunt a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse the city. Mixed · 2All eight episodes will be released together on Prime Video on 25 November. Collider says some fans were disappointed by the binge release and notes the show is billed as a miniseries designed to run for one season.

Centre · 1The panel featured Yeoh, Schafer, Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Matthew Needham, creator Silka Luisa, and executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, according to Screen Rant. Left · 1At the panel, showrunner Silka Luisa said the replicant uprising hinted at in the films has happened and "humans have lost", and described Olwen as a replicant Blade Runner who is supposed to hunt human insurgents but is instead looking for a missing colleague, Merrick. Left · 1Schafer described her human character as a fugitive who goes undercover as a Blade Runner with the LAPD, and Yeoh said her character is dying; Luisa said the blue-tinged nail beds seen in a clip shown only to the room signal this, a nod to Roy Batty in the original film.

Left · 1Executive producer Broderick Johnson tied the story to the emergence of artificial intelligence, while Andrew Kosove called the human-posing-as-replicant dynamic at the core of the show an "interesting and clever" departure. Centre · 1According to Screen Rant, the trailer opens with Olwen talking to a rogue replicant who says replicants are meant to become "gods", and Olwen describes her mission as ending a series of replicant disappearances that has affected 10 females and 18 males. A voiceover mentions a man who knows "the cure for all Replicants". Centre · 2/Film reads the series as one where replicants have won a war and rule the world, with Cora a human posing as a replicant Blade Runner. It reports that Olwen is in the last week of her life, and says the trailer's mention of a cure suggests replicants may be seeking a way to escape their expiry dates. Screen Rant instead describes Cora as a replicant.

Left · 1Silka Luisa is showrunner, creator and executive producer; Ridley Scott is among the executive producers, and Jonathan van Tulleken directed the first two episodes. The franchise is based on Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?". Centre · 1Deadline lists the series as made with Amazon MGM Studios and Alcon Television Group, adds cast members Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi, and recalls that the original 1982 film starred Harrison Ford and Sean Young, with Ford returning in Denis Villeneuve's 2049 in 2017. Deadline places the panel on Sunday in one line and on Saturday in another; the other outlets say Saturday.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
