The story, neutrally told

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, made an unannounced appearance at the United for Freedom gala at the Imperial War Museum in central London on Thursday night, 1 October. He arrived in a tuxedo, smiled and waved at photographers, and was followed by a bodyguard; the Daily Mirror said he came without his wife Meghan. The gala was held to raise money for organisations supporting Ukraine as the war entered its fourth year earlier this year.

In his address Harry spoke about the historical ties between Britain and Ukraine and about his recent trips there, saying: "I have seen something in Ukraine that makes it impossible for me to look away." He praised Ukrainians defending the front line while keeping businesses and schools running and developing technology changing modern warfare, and said: "Their courage deserves more than our admiration. It deserves our resolve." The Mirror also quoted him on meeting members of the Ukrainian Invictus community, and recalled that earlier this year he visited Bucha with the Halo Trust and told President Putin at the Kyiv Security Forum to "stop this war".

The same evening Prince William, the Prince of Wales, sent a video message to the inaugural Bowelbabe Fund Rebel Ball at the Hurlingham Club in west London, held on what would have been Dame Deborah James's 45th birthday; the Mirror said it raised almost £317,000. The Daily Mail set the appearance against the Sussexes' return to the UK in late August, reporting that they are awaiting a decision on taxpayer-funded security, that Meghan launched a £112 advent calendar, and that the couple's spokesman criticised paparazzi seen near their children's school.
