The story, neutrally told

The Duke of Sussex told NATO's military committee in Brussels, by video link, that leaving the British Army cost them part of their "purpose and identity". Harry spoke as founder of the Invictus Games and said: "When I hung up my uniform, I felt as though I had lost not simply a profession, but part of my purpose and identity. I was fortunate. I had another way to serve." Harry spent a decade in the forces and ended their military career in 2015; the Mirror adds that this followed two tours of Afghanistan.

Harry urged military leaders to think about what happens to people after service, particularly those who return wounded, injured or sick, and said "enormous" resources go into preparing people to serve. Harry described NATO as "an alliance of nations" defended by people, and said an alliance's strength should be measured also by the people and societies its forces return home to. In an opening address Harry said Invictus is "not a sporting event" but a mission to rebuild purpose and confidence, strengthen families and communities, and connect veterans back into society.

Harry staged the first Invictus Games in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick current and former service personnel, stepped down as a working royal in 2020, and is staging the Games in Birmingham in 2027. Harry and Meghan returned to live in the UK in August after six years in the US; both outlets also recall that Harry was denied military uniform at Queen Elizabeth II's 2022 funeral as a non-working royal and was stripped of military titles and patronages in 2021.
