The story, neutrally told

The Prince of Wales made a surprise appearance by pre-recorded video message at the inaugural Bowelbabe Fund Rebel Ball, held in London on what would have been Dame Deborah James's 45th birthday. William called her "an amazing woman" and recalled that "What struck me was Deborah's positivity and humour in the face of adversity - what she liked to call 'rebellious hope'". He said the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK had achieved much in four and a half years, investing in pioneering research that is "giving more people more time with the ones they love", and that Deborah would have wanted everyone "dancing, celebrating and making memories".

The Mirror reports that guests included her children Hugo, 19, and Eloise, 16, and the Standard says friends and family were present; the ball was hosted by TV presenter Gaby Roslin, with performances by Sophie Ellis Bextor and the West End cast of Disco Inferno. The Mirror adds that First Dates barman Merlin Griffiths, diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in 2021, was a special guest. Dame Deborah's husband said the ball "captured so much of what made her special: her energy, her courage and her ability to bring people together behind a cause she believed in"; the Mirror also quotes him thanking William for his "continued support of the Fund". The two outlets spell his surname differently (Bowen in the Standard, Bown in the Mirror).

Cancer Research UK chief executive Michelle Mitchell said the funds raised would help ensure Deborah's "extraordinary legacy continues to drive progress". Dame Deborah, a podcast host diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016, launched the fund in May 2022 with an initial target of £250,000; the Mirror says it has since raised more than £21million and supported 16 research and awareness projects, including the Bowelbabe Vaccine and the PROSPECT research team. William personally presented her damehood weeks before she died aged 40; the Standard says he joined her family for afternoon tea while she received hospice-at-home care, and the Mirror says it took place in her parents' garden in Surrey after he cleared his diary.
