The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Ramon Vega, a 55-year-old former Switzerland and Tottenham Hotspur defender, said on Wednesday 7 October that he intends to stand in next year's FIFA presidential election. Mixed · 2He is the first person to confirm a challenge to the incumbent, Gianni Infantino, who is seeking reelection. Centre · 2In a statement, Vega said he was standing "to reunite the global football family, deliver genuine and lasting reform, modernise Fifa for the 21st Century, restore stability and credibility", and said the current leadership "has demoralised the game" and that "Football is in the emergency room, on life support."

Right · 1Arab News, citing AFP, reports that Vega presented an 11-page dossier and said member associations were "much more open to change" than when he previously tried to stand. Mixed · 2Infantino is under pressure after his plan to sell stakes in World Cup and other commercial rights to private investors was abandoned following a backlash. Centre · 1UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation called for him to quit, and Infantino said last month he was "fully committed to leading Fifa".

Mixed · 2The Evening Standard reports that the English, Northern Irish, Irish, Scottish and Welsh associations have withdrawn support for Infantino, and Arab News reports that the Swiss Football Association did so last week, citing transparency and accountability concerns. Centre · 2Vega has tried before: he considered running in 2015 after Sepp Blatter's suspension, and he announced a challenge to Infantino later but failed to get the backing of five of FIFA's 211 member federations needed for the ballot. Mixed · 2Whether Vega can appear on the ballot is unclear: Arab News says he needs five federations' backing and a proposer from among them, plus two of the previous five years involved in football and an eligibility review, with candidates having until 18 November.

Centre · 1The Press Association understands UEFA still wants a credible alternative candidate, though none is likely to be settled on at its Thursday meeting in Berlin, where FIFA governance is on the agenda.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
