The story, neutrally told

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, spent Portugal's 2-1 Nations League win over Norway on Sunday on the bench. Coach Jorge Jesus said he had told Ronaldo beforehand that he might come on late, but decided against it. The Daily Mail reported that morning that Ronaldo was set for an emergency meeting with Jesus and the head of the Portuguese football federation (FPF).

At a press conference in Copenhagen, Jesus denied any rift or refusal to train, saying Ronaldo had done individual exercises on Tuesday. He also said Gonçalo Ramos would start against Denmark and Ronaldo would come on only if needed. Ronaldo then did not train, and Portuguese media showed video of him leaving Parken stadium with two staff members.

On Instagram he said that after the press conference and a talk with FPF president Pedro Proenca he had decided to leave camp, and would tell Portuguese people the truth about his reasons in due course. The FPF said preparations would continue with the remaining 24 players. Reuters reported that Ronaldo's private jet was flying from Madrid to Copenhagen and back.

Outlets differ on whether the episode signals a rift and on what it means for his international future.
