Russell T Davies says Billie Piper was added to Doctor Who regeneration to avoid a "death" ending

In his memoir, outgoing Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies says Billie Piper was added to the May 2025 regeneration scene because the original open-ended ending looked like the end of the show. He also explains why the planned 2026 Christmas special was cancelled.

The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Russell T Davies, the outgoing Doctor Who showrunner, says in his memoir that Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper at the end of the May 2025 finale was a late fix made while the show's future was uncertain. Centre · 2The account appears in The Queerest of Folk: A Life in Television, published by Transworld on 8 October, and in an extract run by The Guardian. Centre · 2Davies writes that the finale was originally shot with an open-ended regeneration, but once edited it looked, in his words, like "the death of the show".

Centre · 1Radio Times reports he recalled the team saying, "Think of children watching that. It's like a death. We can't do that to them." Centre · 2Davies says it was "pretty much confirmed" that Disney would not renew its co-production deal, a matter he says was between Disney and the BBC rather than Bad Wolf, and that people were leaving the BBC, including chief content officer Charlotte Moore, a long-time champion of the show. This left "many months of inaction". Centre · 1He says he called an urgent Zoom with executives and proposed that the Doctor regenerate into Piper.

Centre · 2Piper, who played companion Rose Tyler and starred in Bad Wolf's I Hate Suzie, agreed almost instantly; Davies writes that she "gave us the fastest yes we could have had". Centre · 2The BBC has never confirmed that Piper will become the next Doctor, and her role remains unexplained. Davies says a new production team could embrace the appearance or explain it away in "exactly seven words. Painless." Centre · 2The BBC announced a 2026 Christmas special in October 2025 and cancelled it the following June. Davies says he had doubts from the start but pitched a story with an "olde-worlde English village", a mysterious spaceship, an outer-space festival called Winternox and many Daleks.

Centre · 2Radio Times reports that Davies did not get a contract to write the special until the end of March 2026, and that scheduling clashes, including his Channel 4 drama Tip Toe and Piper's work on Netflix's Wednesday, briefly led to talk of an Easter 2027 slot. Centre · 2Under new BBC content chief Kate Phillips, plans to put Doctor Who out to competitive tender were brought forward to 2027. This made the special feel redundant to Davies, who told the BBC on 6 May 2026 he did not think it should be made, and he and Bad Wolf are stepping away. Centre · 2In September the BBC announced a new Doctor Who "flagship series" due in 2028 or 2029, with the winning production company expected to be named in 2027. The BBC declined to comment to Radio Times.
