The story, neutrally told

MixedThe Telegraph, in a joint investigation with Welt am Sonntag, has identified Russian national Oleg Levushkin as the suspected planner of a sabotage attack at Leipzig-Halle airport in Germany. CentreIn the incident, which Anadolu reports occurred in September, a drone carrying a tin packed with explosives struck the wing of a Ukrainian airliner; according to the report it could have caused an explosion and severe structural damage. MixedGerman investigators suspect Levushkin planned the attack and then instructed Andrei Karshakou, a Belarusian proxy agent, to carry it out; Meduza, which spells the name Karshakov, says German media had earlier described the attacker only as a Belarusian citizen.

LeftLevushkin is described as a motorcycle enthusiast who travels through Europe; Meduza says its sister project Agentstvo found photos of such trips on his social media and, from leaked data, that he lived in Riga until at least 2018, then moved to Russia's Pskov region and later to Sevastopol, where business records list him as co-owner of three companies. MixedThe reports say Levushkin has known Denis Smolyaninov for years; per Süddeutsche Zeitung, they met in 2007 when Smolyaninov mediated a financial dispute involving Levushkin's business. MixedSmolyaninov is described as a GRU colonel who heads a department specialising in sabotage abroad; Anadolu adds that the UK Foreign Office sanctioned him last year and that a December 2025 Lithuanian intelligence report called him an alleged chief planner of Russian bomb attacks in Europe.

MixedThe Telegraph links the Leipzig attack to GRU unit 29155, whose former officers Anatoly Chepiga and Alexander Mishkin are accused over the Skripal poisoning and sabotage in the Czech Republic, and which German intelligence reportedly regards as a key force behind Kremlin-ordered operations. CentreAnadolu, citing classified German, Lithuanian and Polish documents, reports that the explosive device closely resembled those in other alleged Russian sabotage plots and that the incident resembles a foiled plot involving drones and explosives in Poland, Lithuania and Germany. CentreA senior German intelligence official quoted in the report said Germany is increasingly an operational theatre for Russian services, and German authorities believe Moscow wants Europeans to see support for Ukraine as risky. The allegations are attributed to media reports and intelligence sources, and the coverage records no response from Levushkin or Russia.
