The story, neutrally told

A Russian drone hit a school in Kyiv on Thursday 1 October, city officials said. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said children were in the shelter at the time, and no injuries were reported. The Independent, in a report crediting the Associated Press, adds that the drone's warhead did not explode; the Reuters copy says the strike started a fire.

The State Emergency Service released images of rescuers sifting through debris and putting out the fire in the charred building, whose windows were shattered. The strike came as Russia intensified attacks on Kyiv and other cities with jet-powered drones that Ukraine's military has struggled to shoot down. Earlier on Thursday, one person was wounded in an attack on a business centre in Odesa; Russia, which says it hits only military targets, said it had struck a data centre in Odesa and a cargo vessel at Chornomorsk.

The Independent also reports that Wednesday saw the biggest Russian attack on Ukraine's power grid since last spring, and that the Institute for the Study of War called it the start of a campaign to degrade Ukraine's energy security before winter. It says Ukraine needs more Patriot missiles, which are in short supply since the Iran war began, and that President Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces hit a drone storage and launch site in Russia's Oryol region.
