The story, neutrally told

A Russian drone struck Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv on Monday 28 September and set the building on fire. Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said one person was killed and three were injured, as the BBC reported. Reuters, in the Straits Times version, said one person was killed and 'several others' wounded, without giving a figure.

Footage showed people leaning out of windows as they evacuated, and firefighters helped some of them out through the windows. One of those trapped was Ihor Malchevsky, 69, a deputy department head. He climbed onto a ledge outside his third-floor window to avoid smoke and flames, then descended a ladder that rescuers had placed against the building. The building is a Tsarist-era structure near the National Opera and the German embassy.

Reuters described the attack as one of a growing number of daytime strikes on central Kyiv using jet-propelled drones that Russia developed to outpace Ukrainian air defences. Reuters said Moscow has recently widened its attacks to logistics, businesses and data centres, while Ukraine has hit Russian oil and defence infrastructure and online retailers. Malchevsky said Ukraine should keep fighting to weaken Russia despite efforts to revive US-backed peace talks. His daughter asked, 'What is all this for?'

A US official said Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev held 'constructive' talks with US counterparts on Tuesday.
