The story, neutrally told

Two Russian drones hit the Pivdennyi (Southern) bridge in Kyiv on Thursday, the first time one of the city's bridges has been struck. The bridge is a main artery across the Dnipro river linking western and eastern Kyiv, and the strike came while a metro train and road traffic were crossing; one drone reportedly hit the base of a central stanchion. A 5 Kanal TV reporter on the metro train said a passenger shouted "Shahed" before the blast sent dust into the carriage; nobody in her compartment was hurt, and the train went only as far as Vydubychi station.

Metro trains were suspended and the bridge was temporarily shut; road traffic was later allowed to resume. Kyiv city authorities said preliminary checks "did not find any critical damage to the structure". The type of drone used was not yet clear, but Ukrainian officials say Russia began using a new jet-powered design on Wednesday; Zelensky's adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov said it carries a 40kg warhead and is built to destroy high-voltage pylons and iron bridge structures.

Ukrainian air force figures show at least 3,177 drones launched in September (up to 29 September, per AFP), against 2,850 recorded in August. Earlier on Thursday, a Russian drone hit the third floor of a school in Kyiv at about 09:00 local time; over 100 students were already in a shelter and no one was hurt, according to head teacher Valentyna Chorna, and Zelensky said Russia must be held fully accountable. The attack followed a large overnight strike on the energy sector, which Kyiv called the start of a deliberate campaign to cripple the grid before winter, and emergency power cuts in Kyiv on Wednesday night.

Ukraine's nuclear regulator said a drone hit the grounds of Kyiv's Institute for Nuclear Research on Wednesday; the test reactor, shut down since 2022, was undamaged and radiation levels were normal. On Russia's position, the BBC notes Russia denies targeting civilians, while AFP says Moscow has acknowledged deliberately targeting Ukraine's energy sector. BBC commentators believe Russia has stepped up its campaign because Ukraine is short of air defences, and Zelensky wants US-made Patriot weapons.
