The story, neutrally told

Sabu's "Arrested Memory" leads the 63rd Golden Horse Awards with 11 nominations, one more than Shu Qi's "Girl", which has 10. Joseph Hsu Chen-chieh's "Double Happiness" and Yeung Leung-chuen's "We Are Born Good" follow with nine each, and Variety reports that these four films are all up for best narrative feature and best film editing. Anthony Chen's "We Are All Strangers" takes the fifth best narrative feature slot; the best director field is Sabu, Hsu, Chen, Herman Yau ("We're Nothing at All") and Edmund Yeo ("The Age of Goodbyes").

Organisers received 587 entries this year, and the nominations were read out by Ma Shih-yuan and Jimmy Liu. Colorist Moya Chou was named Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year and Yu Kan-ping is the lifetime achievement honoree. CNA reports that five Singapore films were nominated: "We Are All Strangers", "The Violinist", "Ah Girl", "Buah" (also known as "Fruit") and "She Said".

"We Are All Strangers" has seven nominations, including best director for Anthony Chen and best leading actress for Yeo Yann Yann, while "The Violinist" and "Ah Girl" have three each. Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority called it "a proud moment for our film industry"; CNA adds that "We Are All Strangers" is Singapore's entry for the 99th Academy Awards' international feature category and that "The Violinist" won the top feature prize at Annecy. The Golden Horse Film Festival opens on 6 November and screens every nominated film; the ceremony is on 22 November at Taipei Music Center, a Sunday for the first time, with TTV broadcasting in Taiwan, StarHub in Singapore and Astro in Malaysia, and the jury to be revealed in late October.
