The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Santander UK reported a pre-tax profit of £1.2bn for the first nine months of 2026, 6% lower than the same period last year. Centre · 1The Evening Standard reported that third-quarter profit (July to September) rose to £630m from £372m a year earlier. Mixed · 2The bank attributed the fall mainly to a first-quarter charge for historic motor finance commission payments and higher restructuring costs.

Right · 1City A.M. said restructuring and specific provisions rose 269% to £495m from £134m, and that the largest named driver was a £179m increase in motor finance provisions booked in the first quarter. Mixed · 2Total motor finance provisions stand at £616m to cover potential costs of the Financial Conduct Authority's redress scheme, which is held up by legal challenges; Santander decided not to challenge the scheme itself, and says the outcome of any remediation remains uncertain while other challenges at the Upper Tribunal continue. Mixed · 2TSB, whose purchase Santander completed in April, contributed £96m of pre-tax profit from May to September; net interest income rose 17% to £3.9bn, and customer deposits and the mortgage book also grew.

Right · 1City A.M. added that TSB also brought £327m of operating costs and a one-off £62m 'day one' credit charge. Mixed · 2Integration is continuing: about 1,000 TSB staff have moved to Santander, and Santander expects cost synergies of around £400m by the end of 2028, according to the Evening Standard. Right · 1City A.M. also noted a small round of redundancies earlier this year expected to affect 33 staff.

Mixed · 2Santander said it expects further cost efficiencies in 2026 'driven by simplification and automation'. Mixed · 2UK chief executive Mahesh Aditya said the bank had advanced TSB's integration 'at pace' and was drawing on Banco Santander's global technology platforms and AI capabilities. Right · 1City A.M. also reported that the wider Banco Santander group made a €3.4bn third-quarter profit, down 2.4% on M&A-related impairments, after completing its $12.2bn acquisition of US lender Webster Financial on 20 August.
